The Nevers arrondissement was created on February 17, 1800. It was one of the first areas when the Nièvre department was officially formed.

The Nevers arrondissement is located in the southwestern part of the Nièvre department. It shares borders with other arrondissements like Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire to the north and Clamecy to the northeast. To the east, it borders Château-Chinon (Ville).
To the south, it touches the Allier department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. To the west, it borders the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
This arrondissement is the largest in the Nièvre department. It covers an area of about 2,020.3 square kilometers (780 square miles). Many people live here, with a population of 118,087 recorded in 2014. This makes it the most populated arrondissement in Nièvre.
