History of Yondó

Yondó began as a camp for oilfield workers. The Royal Dutch Shell oil company built it in 1945. It was designed to house around 2,000 workers and engineers. The camp was built with many modern comforts for its time. These included large, comfortable houses, clean drinking water, electricity, and even air conditioning.

The camp also had a theater, a social club with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a basketball court, and an 18-hole golf course. There was a bowling alley, a large soccer field, and a good sewage system. The company also provided schools, a small hospital with many specialists, and a bilingual school. They even had a small refinery to provide gasoline for local vehicles. The roads were well-maintained, and there was a landing strip for small planes. Radio and telephone communications were also available.

These facilities were considered very luxurious. They attracted many people to settle around the oil production areas. The oil company had rights to use the oil fields until 1985. However, they gave up these rights in 1981 due to pressure from armed groups. The oil production facilities and the camp were then given to the government. Unfortunately, many parts of the camp were damaged or stolen. The new town of Yondó was then officially established to house both original residents and new settlers.
