Yoo-hoo is a popular American chocolate-flavored drink. It was first created in 1928 by Natale Olivieri in Garfield, New Jersey. Today, the company Keurig Dr Pepper makes this drink. Yoo-hoo is mostly made from water, a type of sugar syrup, and whey. It's known for its unique chocolate taste.

The Story of Yoo-hoo

How Yoo-hoo Began

Yoo-hoo started in 1928. Natale Olivieri, who used to bottle fruit drinks, created it in Garfield, New Jersey.

In the 1940s, Thomas Giresi helped Yoo-hoo grow. He opened a bottling plant in Batesburg, South Carolina. This helped the drink reach more people.

Yoo-hoo's Famous Ads

In the 1960s, Yoo-hoo became even more famous. They ran advertisements with baseball star Yogi Berra and his New York Yankees teammates. Yogi Berra would drink Yoo-hoo and say, "It's Me-He for Yoo-Hoo!" This helped make the drink popular with many families. Later, Yoo-hoo used the slogan: "Yoo-hoo, the chocolate action drink."

Who Owned Yoo-hoo?

Over the years, Yoo-hoo has been owned by several different companies. In the 1950s, BBC Industries bought the rights to Yoo-hoo. They owned it until 1976.

After that, Iroquois Brands bought it. Then, in 1981, a group of private investors took over. In 1989, a French company called Pernod Ricard became the owner.

In 2001, Cadbury Schweppes bought Yoo-hoo. They worked to make the drink well-known again. In May 2008, Cadbury Schweppes split into two companies. The Dr Pepper Snapple Group then took over Yoo-hoo.

Where Yoo-hoo is Made

Yoo-hoo's main office is in Tarrytown, New York. The drink is made in plants located in Carlstadt, New Jersey, and Aspers, Pennsylvania. An older location in Opelousas, Louisiana, closed in 2009.

Yoo-hoo also used to own other chocolate milk brands. These included Choc-Ola, Brownie, Cocoa Dusty, and Chocolate Soldier.

About Its Ingredients

In 2010, there was a legal discussion about Yoo-hoo's ingredients. Someone claimed that the advertising might be misleading about how healthy the drink was. They said it contained "partially hydrogenated oil" and "virtually no milk." However, the company that made the drink at the time stated that Yoo-hoo contained "seven vitamins and minerals and no preservatives." They stood by their product.

Yoo-hoo Flavors

Yoo-hoo started adding new flavors in 1995. Some of these new flavors included chocolate-coconut, chocolate-mint, chocolate-banana, and chocolate-strawberry.

Other flavors that have been available are vanilla, strawberry, cookies & cream, chocolate peanut butter, and chocolate caramel. Some flavors, like Double Fudge, banana, and Island Coconut, are no longer made.
