The York Street Historic District is a special area in Newport, Kentucky. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 26, 1995. This means it's an important place with a lot of history. Most of the buildings in this district were built during the mid-to-late Victorian era, which was a time when Queen Victoria ruled England (from 1837 to 1901). The district is located between Seventh Street on the north and Tenth Street on the south.

Even though the York Street Historic District is smaller than the nearby East Row Historic District, it has many interesting buildings and businesses. You can also find some beautiful churches here.

Exploring the York Street Historic District

The York Street Historic District is a great place to see old buildings and learn about history. It shows how people lived and built things a long time ago.

Historic Churches in the District

The district is home to several historic churches, each with its own story.

Salem United Methodist Church: A Story of Change

The Salem United Methodist Church is located at Eight and York streets. It was built in 1882. A famous architect named Samuel Hannaford designed it. In 1986, this church was also added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Sadly, on March 10, 1986, a strong tornado hit the church. It caused a lot of damage, estimated at $210,000. The church members worked hard to fix the steeple and clean up. However, because fewer people were attending, and there was still much to repair, the church decided to join another Methodist church. They then put the building up for sale. Today, this historic church building is known as The Stained Glass Theatre.

Other Churches in the Area

Other churches in the York Street Historic District include the First Baptist Church, also at 8th and York Streets. There is also the building that used to be the York Street Congregational Church.

York Street International Café: A Glimpse into the Past

The York Street International Café is at Eighth and York streets. This café has a special feature: it displays the original stained glass sign from when it was a drugstore. This sign is a cool reminder of the building's past.
