The Yosemite Transportation Company Office is also known as the Wells Fargo Office. It was built in the beautiful Yosemite Valley in 1910. This building was important for helping people travel to and from Yosemite National Park.
It served as a hub for "stage" services. These were like early buses, using either horses or motor vehicles. They carried people and goods between El Portal, where the nearest train station was, and Yosemite Park. The building also helped send messages using telegraph and handled express deliveries, like a post office.
What the Building Looks Like
The Yosemite Transportation Company Office is a special log building. It has one main floor and a half-story above it. The building is about 23 feet (7 meters) long and 21 feet (6.4 meters) wide.
It has a large front porch. This porch has cool-looking log designs. The building is a great example of "Rustic architecture". This style uses natural materials like logs and stones. At Yosemite, they even added strips of cedar bark in pretty patterns to the building.
A Look at Its History
After 1927, travel changed a lot. A paved road for cars was finished, leading right into Yosemite Valley. This meant that the old stage services were not needed as much.
The Yosemite Transportation Company Office then became a place to arrange places to stay in Yosemite Valley. In the late 1930s, the building was changed into a home.
Moving to a New Home
The National Park Service wanted to protect the historic feel of the Old Yosemite Village area. Some buildings were planned to be removed. The Yosemite Transportation Company Office was one of them.
However, instead of being torn down, it was moved! It found a new home at the Pioneer Yosemite History Center in Wawona. This center is also in Yosemite National Park. The building joined other historic structures that had been moved from different parts of Yosemite to be preserved.
The Yosemite Transportation Company Office was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 9, 1978. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
