Yoshika Matsubara (松原 良香, Matsubara Yoshika, born 19 August 1974) is a Japanese football manager and former player. He was born on August 19, 1974. Matsubara played as a forward, which means his main job on the field was to score goals. Today, he is the manager of the J3 League club Iwate Grulla Morioka.
Playing Career Highlights
Matsubara was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. After finishing high school, he started his professional football career. He even played for a team called Peñarol in Uruguay, a country in South America.
When he returned to Japan in 1994, he joined Júbilo Iwata, a team in Japan's top football league, the J1 League. He also played for other Japanese teams like Shimizu S-Pulse and JEF United Ichihara. Later, he played for teams in other countries, including Rijeka in Croatia and Delémont in Switzerland. He also played for Shonan Bellmare and Avispa Fukuoka in Japan, and Progreso and Defensor Sporting in Uruguay.
The 1996 Summer Olympics
One of the most famous moments in Matsubara's playing career was when he represented the Japan U23 national team. He was part of the team that played in the 1996 Summer Olympics.
During this tournament, the Japanese team achieved a huge upset. They defeated the strong Brazil team. That Brazilian team had many famous players who later became global stars, such as Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, and Bebeto. This victory is often called the "Miracle of Miami" because of how unexpected it was.
Managerial Roles
After his playing career, Yoshika Matsubara became a football manager. He has coached several teams. In 2005, he managed Shizuoka FC. Later, in 2015, he took charge of SC Sagamihara. Currently, since 2023, he is the manager of Iwate Grulla Morioka.
