Yoshio Mochizuki (望月 義夫, Mochizuki Yoshio, 2 May 1947 – 19 December 2019) was an important Japanese politician. He was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, which is one of Japan's main political groups. He served in the House of Representatives, which is part of Japan's national government called the Diet. He also held a very important job as the Minister of the Environment.

Yoshio Mochizuki was born on May 2, 1947, in Shimizu, a city in Japan's Shizuoka area. He went to Chuo University, a well-known university in Japan. After finishing his studies, he decided to work in public service.

Starting His Political Career

Mochizuki began his political journey in his hometown.

  • In 1975, he was first elected to the city assembly of Shimizu. This is like a local council that helps run the city. He served four terms there, meaning he was re-elected three times.
  • Later, in 1991, he was elected to the assembly of Shizuoka Prefecture. A prefecture is like a state or province in other countries. He served two terms in this role.

Becoming a National Leader

In 1996, Yoshio Mochizuki took a big step in his career. He was elected to the House of Representatives, which is a major part of Japan's national government. This meant he would help make laws for the whole country.

His Work as Environment Minister

From September 2014 to October 2015, Mochizuki served as the Minister of the Environment. In this role, he was in charge of protecting Japan's natural environment.
