Yoshito Usui (臼井 儀人, Usui Yoshito, April 21, 1958 – September 11, 2009) was a famous Japanese manga artist. He was best known for creating the very popular Crayon Shin-chan series.

Yoshito Usui was born in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. His creative work brought joy to many people around the world.

About His Life

Yoshito Usui finished high school in 1977 in Saitama. He later went to a design college part-time but did not finish his studies there. In 1979, he started working for an advertising company.

He began his career as a cartoonist in 1987. His first series, Darakuya Store Monogatari, was published in a magazine called Weekly Manga Action.

In August 1990, his most famous series, Crayon Shin-chan, started in the same magazine. This series was a spin-off from a character in his earlier work. An animated TV show based on Crayon Shin-chan began in 1992. A popular animated movie followed in 1993, which made Crayon Shin-chan a huge hit.

Yoshito Usui and his wife had two daughters. At the time of his passing, both of his daughters had grown up and moved out of the family home.

His Passing

On September 12, 2009, Yoshito Usui's family reported him missing. He had gone hiking near his hometown of Kasukabe in Gunma Prefecture and did not return.

On September 19, 2009, a body was found at the bottom of a cliff. It was located at Mount Arafune in Gunma. The clothes matched those Yoshito Usui was wearing. The next day, his family and dental records confirmed it was him. A camera was found nearby, and the last picture on it was taken from the cliff.

His funeral was held on September 23. It was a private service, but about three thousand people attended to pay their respects.
