Yoshiyuki Matsuyama (松山 吉之, Matsuyama Yoshiyuki, born July 31, 1966) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented midfielder who played for several top clubs in Japan. Matsuyama also had the honor of playing for the Japan national team. His brother, Hiroaki Matsuyama, was also a professional football player.
Matsuyama's Club Journey
Yoshiyuki Matsuyama was born in Kyoto on July 31, 1966. After finishing his studies at Waseda University, he began his professional football career in 1989. His first team was Furukawa Electric. In 1991, he moved to Matsushita Electric, which later became known as Gamba Osaka. He played there for many years. In 1997, Matsuyama joined his hometown club, Kyoto Purple Sanga. He decided to retire from playing professional football at the end of the 1997 season.
Playing for Japan
Matsuyama's talent was noticed early in his career. In April 1987, while he was still a student at Waseda University, he was chosen to join the Japan national team. He played in the qualification matches for the 1988 Summer Olympics. His first game for Japan was on April 8, 1987, against Indonesia. Matsuyama played a total of 10 games for Japan and scored 4 goals before 1989.
