Yost is a small, quiet place in the northwestern part of Box Elder County, Utah, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people living together without a formal town council. Yost is nestled on the northern slopes of the Raft River Mountains, about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Brigham City.

About Yost, Utah

Yost is a community that has seen many changes over the years. It started as a small settlement and grew into a town. Later, its population decreased, and it became an unincorporated area again.

How Yost Started

The area was first called "George Creek." This name came from George Eddy Sanderson, an early range rider. He came to the area with Charles Yost from the Nevada Territory. Charles Yost decided to stay in this new place.

In 1887, Charles Yost became the postmaster for the community. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office. After building his cabin, Charles lived alone for a while. Later, he married Maria Larsen from Terrace, Utah. For four years, Maria was the only woman living in Yost.

Growing and Shrinking

Other pioneer homesteaders soon joined Charles and Maria. Homesteaders were people who settled on and farmed new land. By 1910, the community of Yost had grown to 251 people. They built a schoolhouse for children and a church for the community.

On August 19, 1935, Yost officially became an incorporated town. This means it formed its own local government. This happened during the Great Depression, a time when many people faced economic hardship. At that time, Yost had the largest land area of any town in Utah.

However, the land around Yost was not very good for farming or ranching. Because of this, fewer people wanted to live there. The population began to decline. By 1940, there were 172 people. By 1970, only 51 people lived in Yost.

On January 6, 1984, the town of Yost officially disincorporated. This means it gave up its town government and became an unincorporated community again.
