Younghi Pagh-Paan (born in 1945) is a famous composer from South Korea. She is known for creating unique and modern music. Her work has been performed around the world.
Early Life and Education
Younghi Pagh-Paan was born in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. She loved music from a young age. From 1965 to 1971, she studied music at the Seoul National University. This is one of the top universities in South Korea.
In 1974, she received a special scholarship called the DAAD scholarship. This allowed her to travel to Germany to continue her music studies. She attended the Freiburg Musikhochschule. There, she learned a lot from famous teachers. She studied how to compose music with Klaus Huber. She also learned about music analysis with Brian Ferneyhough. She studied music theory with Peter Förtig and piano with Edith Picht-Axenfeld.
Teaching and Career
After finishing her studies, Younghi Pagh-Paan became a guest professor. This means she taught at universities for a short time. She taught in Graz in 1991 and Karlsruhe from 1992 to 1993.
In 1994, she became a full professor of composition. She taught at the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany. She also started and leads a special group called Atelier Neue Musik. This group helps new musicians and composers.
Younghi Pagh-Paan is one of the most performed composers. Her music was played often at the Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. This is a very important music festival.
Awards and Recognition
Younghi Pagh-Paan has received many awards for her amazing music. These awards show how important her work is in the world of music.
- 1978: She won 1st Prize at the 5th Composers Seminar in Boswil, Switzerland.
- 1979: She won 1st Prize at the International Rostrum of Composers. This is a big award from Unesco.
- 1979: She received the Nan-Pa Music Prize in Korea.
- 1980: She won 1st Prize from the City of Stuttgart in Germany.
- 1980/1981: She received a scholarship from the Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung.
- 1985: She received a scholarship from the Kunststiftung of Baden-Württemberg.
- 1995: She won the Heidelberg Artists Prize.
- 2006: She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Seoul National University.
- 2007: She was given the Order of Civil Merit of the Republic of Korea. This is a high honor from her home country.
- 2009: She received the 15th KBS Global Korean Award.
- 2009: She became a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. This is a very respected group of artists.
- 2020: She won the Berliner Kunstpreis.
