Yount is a small, unincorporated community located in Perry County, Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of a larger area, in this case, Saint Mary's Township.
The Story of Yount
Yount began its history in 1886. It was first known as Yount's Store. The community got its name from a man named Henry Yount. He was a merchant, which means he owned a store. Henry Yount was also a postmaster, someone in charge of a local post office, and a county judge, who helps make decisions for the county.
Just two years later, in 1888, the name was made shorter to simply Yount. The post office in Yount served the community for many years, from 1887 until 1954.
A church called Mt. Pisca Lutheran Church was started in Yount in 1852. It was active until 1868. In that same year, the church changed its name to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. This church continued to be a part of the community until 1974.
