Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw is a special school in Wales. It teaches all subjects in the Welsh language. This means students learn completely in Welsh. The school is located in Trevethin, Pontypool, in an area called Torfaen. It is named after a Saint called Gwynllyw.
In 2017, about 926 students attended the school. In 2022, the school changed its name from 'Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw' to 'Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw'. This change happened because it became an "all-age school." This means it teaches students from a very young age all the way up to 19 years old. It was the first school of its kind in South East Wales.

School History
How Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw Started
Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw opened in 1988. It was the very first Welsh-medium school in the old Gwent area. At first, the school used a building that used to be Trevethin Comprehensive School.
For its first three years, the school was in an old building in Abercarn. But the school quickly grew too big for this space. More students wanted to learn in Welsh. So, the school needed a larger place. The education leaders suggested using the old Trevethin upper school building. This is where the school is located today, in Trevethin, Pontypool.
Learning in Welsh
Students at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw learn everything in Welsh. They come from many different Welsh-language primary schools. These schools are in four different areas: Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, and Newport. The main goal is for students to become fluent in Welsh. This way, they can learn all their subjects using Welsh as their main language.
In 2008, a report from Estyn (the Welsh education inspection body) found something interesting. It said that most students, about 94.5%, came from homes where English was the main language. Only a small number, 5.3%, came from Welsh-speaking homes. However, the report also said that all students spoke Welsh very well. They spoke it either as their first language or at a similar high level.
School Improvements and Growth
In 2009, the school received money to make big improvements. They replaced old temporary buildings with a new, modern complex. This new building was finished in 2012.
Later, in 2018, the school got £3 million more. This money was for building a new primary school section. Work on this new part began in 2020. They started by taking down three old temporary buildings. These buildings were where the new primary school would be built.
