Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw is a special school in Wales where students learn everything in the Welsh language. It's located in Trevethin, a town near Pontypool in Torfaen. The school is named after a saint called Gwynllyw.
In 2024, about 781 students attended the school. In 2022, the school changed its name from Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw to Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw. This change happened because it became an "all-age" school, teaching students from age 3 all the way up to 18. It was the first school of its kind in South East Wales.

School History
How the School Started
Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw first opened its doors in 1988. It was the very first Welsh-medium school in the area that used to be called Gwent. The school is in a building that was once used by another school, Trevethin Comprehensive School.
For its first three years, the school was in a smaller building. But it quickly grew too big for that space. Since it was one of the fastest-growing schools in Wales, it needed a larger home. So, it moved to the current building in Trevethin, Pontypool.
Learning in Welsh
Students at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw are taught completely in Welsh. They come from different areas, including Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, and Newport. The main goal is to help students become fluent in Welsh and learn all their subjects in the language.
Most students (about 94.5%) come from homes where English is the main language. However, all students learn to speak Welsh very well, almost like it's their first language.
School Improvements
In 2009, the school received money to make big improvements. They replaced many old temporary buildings with a new, modern complex. This construction work was finished in 2012.
Later, in 2018, the school got £3 million to build a primary school section. Work on this new part began in 2020. The new primary school opened in September 2022 and can teach up to 210 young students.
