Yucuquimi de Ocampo is a small, interesting town located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It's part of the Tezoatlán de Segura y Luna area, found in the Mixteca Baja region. This town is special because many Mixtec people live here, and a lot of them still speak the Mixtec language.

Yucuquimi de Ocampo has a long history that goes back even before the Spanish arrived in Mexico.
Town's Challenges and Hopes
In September 2019, something important happened in the town. The local leader, Eloina León Vázquez, said that the government hadn't sent money and help that was promised. Because of this, the town wanted to become an independent area, managing its own affairs. They felt ignored by the state and local governments.
To show how serious they were, people from the town, along with some supporters, blocked a main highway. They said they would stay there until an agreement was reached. Soon after, the National Guard arrived to help bring things back to normal.

The name Yucuquimi de Ocampo comes from the Mixtec phrase yucuquini. This phrase means "cerro del lucero" in Spanish. In English, it roughly translates to "mountain of the morning star". You can often see this phrase and a picture of a mountain with a bright star on vehicles in Yucuquimi de Ocampo.

Many people in Yucuquimi de Ocampo are Mixtec. About 86% of the population speaks the Mixtec Language, specifically the Mixteco de Tezoatlán dialect. Spanish is also widely spoken and is taught in the schools.
Daily Life in Yucuquimi
Yucuquimi de Ocampo is a farming community. Many people in the town plant corn when the rainy season begins, usually in late May or early June.
While some farmers now use tractors, most still make their own plows and use working animals to prepare their fields. The corn is harvested in November. The dried corn stalks are then used as feed for the animals. After harvesting, the corn is stored in large sacks and used to make masa for tortillas.
Arts and Culture
Many people in Yucuquimi de Ocampo are very skilled artisans. They are especially good at making things from dried palm leaves. This skill is part of Basket weaving. They commonly create items like floor mats, baskets, hats, ropes, fire fans, and toys.

Getting Around: Infrastructure
Most of the roads in Yucuquimi de Ocampo are dirt roads. There is only one paved road that connects the town to other small towns nearby. This paved road goes north to San Andrés Yutatío and west to San Marcos de Garzón. It passes through the Buenos Aires neighborhood.
