Yukimi Daifuku is a super yummy Japanese treat! It's a special kind of ice cream made by a company called Lotte. Imagine soft, chewy mochi (a type of rice cake) wrapped around a scoop of delicious ice cream. The name Yukimi Daifuku means "snow-viewing daifuku" in Japanese.

A Sweet History

This cool snack first came out in Japan in October 1981. It started as a ball of vanilla ice cream wrapped in a thin layer of soft, chewy mochi.

Before Yukimi Daifuku, Lotte made a treat called Watabōshi in 1980. Watabōshi was a small ice cream wrapped in marshmallow. But people in Japan really loved mochi! So, Lotte worked hard to make mochi that would stay soft even when frozen. They figured it out in 1981, and that's how Yukimi Daifuku was born!

Lots of Flavors!

Yukimi Daifuku comes in a few different sizes. You can get a carton with two pieces of ice cream. It even comes with a tiny plastic pick to help you eat it!

There's also a "mini yukimi daifuku" box. This one has nine smaller ice creams, and each comes with its own little spoon. How cool is that?

You can also find a "yukimi daifuku petit three colour box." This special box has three different kinds of ice cream: green tea, chocolate, and vanilla. Many people really love the classic vanilla flavor because it's so sweet!

Besides vanilla, you can try other yummy flavors too. Some popular ones are strawberry milk, triple chocolate, and raw chocolate. There's also a special tokachi azuki flavor, which uses a type of red bean paste.

The regular two-piece Yukimi Daifuku (vanilla, strawberry milk, triple chocolate) has two pieces, each 47 mL. The mini boxes (like tokachi azuki and raw chocolate) have nine pieces, each 30 mL.

During the hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season in Japan, you might find a special strawberry ice cream flavor. It's perfect for enjoying while watching the beautiful cherry blossoms!

What Does the Name Mean?

The name Yukimi comes from a fun Japanese activity. It's like hanami (cherry blossom viewing), but instead of flowers, you watch snow falling! It's a peaceful way to enjoy winter.

The name Yukimi Daifuku is also a play on words. There's a traditional Japanese sweet called tsukimi daifuku. This treat is eaten while people enjoy watching the Moon. So, Yukimi Daifuku is like a "snow-viewing" version of that sweet!
