The Yukon Order of Pioneers
The Yukon Order of Pioneers is a historic group that played an important role in the early days of the Yukon. It was formed by people who wanted to support each other in a new and often challenging land. Today, it continues to be a community group focused on history and friendship.
What is This Order?
When the Yukon Order of Pioneers first began, it was like a group of friends helping each other out. They wanted to make sure everyone in their group was safe and looked after. At first, they even helped keep order, almost like a local police force, in the wild frontier.
How the Order Started
The group was founded in 1894, before the big Klondike Gold Rush made the Yukon famous. Back then, life was tough, and people needed to rely on each other. The founders of the Order wanted to create a strong community. To join, you had to be a man with a good reputation and have lived in the Yukon for at least ten years. This showed you were committed to the area.
What the Order Does Today
After the early 1900s, the government took over the job of policing. So, the Yukon Order of Pioneers changed its main goals. Now, their focus is on social activities, preserving history, and celebrating the culture of the Yukon. They still care deeply about the well-being of their members. There are currently two main groups, called "lodges," for the Order. Lodge #1 is in Dawson City, and Lodge #2 is in Whitehorse.
