About Yung6ix
His Early Life and Music Journey
Onome Onokohwomo was born and grew up in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. He was the oldest of five children. From a young age, he loved music, especially rap.
When he was a student, he enjoyed rap battles. He even formed a hip hop group called G-Squad with his friends. They performed at many talent shows in Delta State. Music was their biggest passion. Yung6ix once shared how much he loved music. He even used his school money to pay for his first song! He would walk for hours to get to the studio. It was hard, but his passion kept him going.
After high school, he moved to western Nigeria to follow his music dreams. He also went to Oduduwa University. His stage name, Yung6ix, came from his high school nickname '6ixty'.
Starting His Career
In Lagos, he kept making music. His song "I'm an African" caught the eye of Gbemi Ereku, who signed him to 411 Entertainment in 2009. By 2010, he became well-known after his cover of "Oleku" became very popular online.
He then released "So Far Gone," featuring P. Fizzy. This song was a freestyle over Wiz Khalifa's "This Plane." In January 2011, Yung6ix released "Plenty Money" from his mixtape. A music video for the song came out soon after. The song was first played on Nigerian radio on Beat 99.9 FM.
Growing as an Artist
In April 2011, 411 Entertainment teamed up with Storm Records. This partnership helped Yung6ix's music career grow even more. He worked with Wizkid on a song called "Follow Me." A music video for "Follow Me" was also made.
In September 2011, Yung6ix released "Oh My Gosh." This song was the fourth track from his Green Light Green project. It earned him nominations for "Lyricist on the Roll" and "Best Rap Single" at the Headies Awards the next year.
His mixtape, Green Light Green, was released on December 26, 2011. The music video for "Oh My Gosh" came out in January 2012. It was filmed in Lagos and Johannesburg. Other famous artists like Naeto C and Jesse Jagz appeared in the video. Yung6ix was also featured on M.I's Illegal Music 2. M.I even called him the "King of the South."
In May 2012, he released "Picking Things," a song featuring Naeto C and E. Kelly. The next month, Yung6ix shared that his first album would be called 6ix O'Clock. He was also nominated for "Most Promising Act" at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
New Ventures and Albums
In 2013, Yung6ix started his own music company called "Kash Kamp." This company included artist Percy and producer Otee Beatz. Later that year, Kash Kamp partnered with "Trick Billionaire MusiQ." This partnership aimed to share Yung6ix's music with the world.
Yung6ix worked with Percy on "First Class," another song from his album. The music video for "First Class" was nominated for "Best Hip Hop Video" at the 2013 Nigerian Music Video Awards.
His first full album, 6ix O'Clock, was released on February 6, 2014. It had 16 songs and featured many guest artists like Phyno, M.I, Ice Prince, Yemi Alade, and Wizkid.
