The Yunnan cherry (scientific name: 'Prunus yunnanensis') is a beautiful tree. It is also known as the Yunnan cherry in Chinese (Chinese: 云南樱桃). This tree comes from the southeastern parts of China. You can find it in places like Yunnan, Guangxi, and Sichuan. It likes to grow in mountains, usually between 1,900 and 2,600 meters high. Its white flowers bloom from March to May. They often appear when new leaves start to grow. The tree then produces fruit about two months later.
About the Yunnan Cherry Tree
The Yunnan cherry tree often has many stems. It usually grows to be 4 to 8 meters (about 13 to 26 feet) tall. Some can be as short as 3 meters (10 feet) or as tall as 9 meters (30 feet).
Tree Parts
- Bark: The bark of the tree is gray.
- Branches: Its smaller branches are brownish-gray. Young twigs are green.
- Leaves: The leaves have a small stem called a petiole. This stem is about 6 to 12 millimeters long. The leaves themselves are shaped like an oval or a long oval. They are about 3.5 to 6 centimeters (1.4 to 2.4 inches) long. They are also 2 to 3.5 centimeters (0.8 to 1.4 inches) wide. The top side of the leaves is a darker green.
- Flowers: The flowers grow in groups called inflorescences. Each group usually has 3 to 9 flowers. These flowers are arranged in clusters or long stalks. Each flower has many stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen. There are usually 33 to 45 stamens in each flower.
- Fruit: The fruit is a type of berry called a drupe. It is purplish-red in color. The fruit is small, about 7 to 10 millimeters (0.28 to 0.39 inches) long. It is also 5 to 8 millimeters (0.20 to 0.31 inches) wide.
