Yvette Alexander's Political Career
Yvette Alexander began her time on the Council of the District of Columbia on May 1, 2007. She won a special election to take over from her mentor, Vincent C. Gray. Mr. Gray had previously represented Ward 7 before becoming the council chairman. In this special election, Yvette Alexander received 34 percent of the votes. She won against 17 other candidates.
In 2008, she ran for re-election in the Democratic primary. A primary election helps a political party choose its best candidate for the main election. Yvette Alexander won both the primary and the general election that year.
Yvette Alexander also worked to support voting rights for Washington, D.C.. She spoke with other state groups at the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. She was also a "superdelegate" for Barack Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. A superdelegate is a special kind of delegate who can vote for any candidate they choose.
After her time on the council ended in 2017, Yvette Alexander started her own business. She now works as a consultant in the health care field.
