Yvon Dupuis's Political Journey
Early Life and First Steps in Politics
Yvon Dupuis was born in Montreal, Quebec. He studied at Collège de Varennes in Longueuil. Before becoming a politician, he worked as an insurance agent. He also owned two music stores.
His first step into politics was in Quebec. He was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in 1952. He represented the area of Montréal–Sainte-Marie. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Quebec. He was not re-elected in the 1956 provincial election.
Moving to Federal Politics
After his time in Quebec politics, Dupuis tried federal politics. He ran as an independent Liberal in 1957 but did not win. However, he was successful in 1958. He was elected as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He represented the area of Saint-Jean—Iberville—Napierville.
He was re-elected in both the 1962 and 1963 federal elections. In 1963, Prime Minister Lester Pearson chose him for an important role. Dupuis became a Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary of State. In 1964, he was appointed as a minister without a specific department.
Challenges and Later Career
In 1965, Yvon Dupuis faced some serious accusations. Because of these accusations, he resigned from his position as minister. He was the first Canadian cabinet member to resign under such circumstances. He ran again in the 1965 election but lost. Later, in 1968, he was found not guilty of the accusations.
After this, he continued his political efforts in Quebec. In 1973, he became the leader of the Ralliement créditiste du Québec. However, he did not win a seat in the 1973 provincial election. He then left that party. In 1974, he started his own party called the Parti présidentiel. He resigned as its leader later that year. This marked the end of his political career.
Life After Politics
