Yvonne Mosquito was born on December 19, 1964. She is a British politician. She served as the Lord Mayor of Birmingham from 2018 to 2019. She is a member of the Labour Party. Yvonne Mosquito has also been a member of the Birmingham City Council since 1996. She represented the Bordesley and Highgate ward and previously the Nechells ward. From 2012 to 2016, she was the West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner.
Early Life and Public Service
Yvonne Mosquito grew up in Balsall Heath, a part of Birmingham. She started her career by working at a Saturday school in Handsworth. Later, she worked for a company that installed double glazing. In the early 1990s, she dedicated her time to helping young people. She worked to create more opportunities for them.
In 1996, Yvonne Mosquito was elected as a councillor for the Labour Party. This meant she became a member of the Birmingham City Council. She is also an ordained minister, which means she has a role in a church.
Becoming Lord Mayor of Birmingham
In May 2018, Yvonne Mosquito became the Lord Mayor of Birmingham. This happened after another Labour Party candidate, Lynda Clinton, lost her council seat. The motion to make Yvonne Mosquito Lord Mayor was formally proposed by Sybil Spence. Sybil Spence was the first black woman to hold the position of Lord Mayor.
Yvonne Mosquito became the second black woman to serve as Lord Mayor. She was also the ninth woman overall to hold this important role. Conservative politician Anne Underwood, who was Lord Mayor before Mosquito, called her a 'champion of the underdog'. This means she stands up for people who are less powerful or face challenges.
A Special Kitchen Opening
Near the end of her term as Lord Mayor, on May 14, 2019, Yvonne Mosquito officially opened comedian Joe Lycett's kitchen extension. At first, she wasn't going to attend because it wasn't a public event. However, Joe Lycett decided to raffle off four tickets to the opening. He did this to raise money for charity.
Because members of the public could now attend, Yvonne Mosquito agreed to open the kitchen. Other famous people, like comedian Katherine Ryan and Sky Sports presenter Lloyd Griffith, were also there. A special plaque was placed outside the kitchen extension, naming it The Mosquito Wing.
In July 2019, Joe Lycett announced that the raffle had raised over £3,000 for charity. He presented the money to Yvonne Mosquito and the new Lord Mayor, Liberal Democrats' Mohammed Azim. Yvonne Mosquito said that Joe Lycett "captures the spirit of Birmingham" because of his fun and charitable actions.
