Zico is a popular brand of drinks made from coconut water. These refreshing drinks are produced by a company called Zico Rising. It first started as Zico Beverages in 2004.

For a while, a big company called the Coca-Cola Company owned Zico. But in January 2021, Zico was sold back to its original founder, Mark Rampolla, through his company PowerPlant Ventures.

The Story of Zico

How Zico Started

Mark Rampolla founded Zico Beverages in 2004. He got the idea for coconut water drinks when he was working in Central America with the Peace Corps.

Changes in Ownership

In 2009, the Coca-Cola Company bought a small part of Zico. They bought more of the company in 2012. By 2013, Coca-Cola owned all of Zico.

In 2020, Coca-Cola announced they would stop selling Zico products. This was because sales of coconut water products had gone down. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic caused some economic challenges.

In January 2021, PowerPlant Ventures announced they had bought the Zico brand from the Coca-Cola Company. This meant Zico was back with its original founder, Mark Rampolla, who helped start PowerPlant Ventures. The company was then renamed Zico Rising.

Zico Drinks and Flavors

As of late 2023, Zico offers three main types of drinks. You can find links to buy them on Amazon.com from the company's website.

  • Zico Natural contains only pasteurized coconut water. It is not made from concentrate.
  • Zico Chocolate has 70% coconut water, along with water, cane sugar, and cocoa powder. It is a dairy-free choice that tastes like chocolate milk but has less sugar.
  • Zico Hydrate comes in a Coconut Lime flavor. It contains 30% coconut water, flavorings, and other ingredients. The official website also describes Fruit Punch and Tropical flavors for Zico Hydrate, but these were not available on Amazon.com in late 2023.

In 2017, Zico also offered flavors like natural, chocolate, jalapeño mango, and watermelon raspberry.
