Coconut water facts for kids
Coconut water is the clear, sweet liquid found inside young, green coconuts. It's a natural drink that comes straight from the fruit of the coconut palm tree. When a coconut is growing, this water helps the inside of the coconut develop and become the white, fleshy part we often eat.
Getting Coconut Water
To get the best coconut water, coconuts are usually picked from the tree when they are still green and young. People often make a small hole in the coconut to drink the water inside. Coconuts that fall to the ground on their own might not be as fresh and can get damaged by insects or animals.
Drinking and Using Coconut Water
Coconut water is a very popular drink in tropical countries around the world. You can find it fresh, chilled, or in bottles and cans.
Many street vendors sell fresh coconuts. They often cut them open right in front of you with a special tool so you can drink the water right away. You can also buy coconut water in stores, packaged in cartons or plastic bottles. Sometimes, these packaged drinks even have small pieces of coconut pulp or coconut jelly added to them.
Besides being a refreshing drink, coconut water can be used to make other things. For example, it can be fermented to create coconut vinegar. It's also an ingredient in nata de coco, which is a fun, jelly-like food that's often used in desserts.
