On February 24, 2007, Gorres had a chance to win a world title. He challenged Fernando Montiel, who was the WBO super flyweight champion. The fight was held in Gorres's hometown. Gorres lost the fight by a small decision, meaning the judges were split on who won.
He also fought Vic Darchinyan on February 2, 2008. This fight was to decide who would get to challenge for another world title. The match ended in a draw, but Darchinyan was chosen to fight for the championship because he was ranked higher.

Career-Ending Injury
On November 13, 2009, Z Gorres had a fight against Luis Melendez. He won the fight, but in the last 30 seconds of the final round, he was knocked down. After the fight, Gorres collapsed in the ring and had to be taken away on a stretcher.
He needed surgery to help with swelling in his brain. Doctors had planned to keep him in a special sleep for a few days. However, Gorres got better much faster than expected and woke up. This injury meant that he could no longer continue his boxing career.
