Zacchaeus (sometimes spelled Zaccheus) was a very important tax collector in the ancient city of Jericho. His story is found in the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. He is famous for climbing a sycamore tree to see Jesus. He is also known for being very generous.

Tax collectors like Zacchaeus worked for the Roman Empire. They collected money from people, but they often took extra for themselves. This made them very unpopular with their own Jewish community. Even though he was disliked, Zacchaeus showed great faith and generosity. He was an example of Jesus's mission to help everyone, including those who were seen as outsiders.

Who Was Zacchaeus?

Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho. This city was known for producing and selling a valuable plant called balsam. Because of this, Zacchaeus's job was very important and he became very rich.

Zacchaeus Meets Jesus

One day, Jesus was passing through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem. A large crowd gathered to see him. Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus too, but he had a problem. He was quite short, and the crowd was too big for him to see over their heads.

Climbing the Sycamore Tree

To solve his problem, Zacchaeus ran ahead of the crowd. He then climbed up into a sycamore tree that was along Jesus's path. When Jesus reached that spot, he looked up into the tree. He called Zacchaeus by name and told him to come down. Jesus said he wanted to visit Zacchaeus's house.

Jesus Visits Zacchaeus's Home

The crowd was very surprised by this. They were shocked that Jesus, a respected teacher, would go to the home of a tax collector. Tax collectors were considered sinners. But Zacchaeus was very happy. He welcomed Jesus into his home.

While Jesus was there, Zacchaeus stood up and made an important promise. He said he would give half of everything he owned to the poor. He also promised that if he had cheated anyone, he would pay them back four times the amount. Jesus then said that salvation had come to Zacchaeus's house that day.

What Happened Later?

Over time, some stories and traditions grew about Zacchaeus. In Jericho, there is an old square tower that people traditionally call the House of Zacchaeus. However, this is likely a medieval story and not from Zacchaeus's time.

Some early Christian writings also mention Zacchaeus. One writing from the Apostolic Constitutions says that "Zacchaeus the Publican" became the first bishop of a city called Caesarea. There is also a medieval legend that connects Zacchaeus with a French holy site called Rocamadour.

Zacchaeus in Church Services

The story of Zacchaeus is very important in some church traditions. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches, the story is read on a special Sunday. This Sunday is called "Zacchaeus Sunday." It happens just before the start of Great Lent, a time of fasting and prayer.

The story is chosen for this time for two main reasons. First, Jesus called Zacchaeus to come down from the tree. This is seen as a symbol of being humble. Second, Zacchaeus showed he was sorry for his past actions and changed his ways. This is called repentance. In some churches, Zacchaeus Sunday marks the beginning of a new Paschal cycle, which is the cycle of Easter dates.

In Western Christian churches, the story of Zacchaeus is often read when a church building is dedicated or celebrates its anniversary. In some parts of Germany, a special red flag with a white cross is flown outside churches on their anniversary. This flag is even called the Zacchaeus flag.

Important Lessons from Zacchaeus

The story of Zacchaeus teaches us several important lessons. The name Zacchaeus means 'pure' or 'innocent'. Some people use his story to show what Jesus meant when he said, "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God."

Zacchaeus's story is also often compared to another Bible story about a Rich Young Ruler. Both Zacchaeus and the Rich Young Ruler were wealthy men. However, the Rich Young Ruler did not want to give up his money. Zacchaeus, on the other hand, was happy to give away half of his wealth to help the poor. He also promised to pay back anyone he had cheated. This shows a big difference in their hearts and actions.
