Zanthoxylum dipetalum is a special kind of tree. It belongs to the same plant family as Szechuan pepper. This tree has two Hawaiian names: Kāwa'u and Heaʻe. You can only find Zanthoxylum dipetalum growing in the Hawaiian islands. It lives in the forests on three or four of these islands.

What are the Varieties of this Tree?

This tree has two main types, called varieties. Think of varieties like different versions of the same plant.

The dipetalum Variety

The first type is called Z. d. var. dipetalum. You can find this variety on the island of Kauaʻi. It also grows in the mountains of Oʻahu. On the island of Hawaiʻi, it lives inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. It might also be found on the island of Molokaʻi.

The tomentosum Variety

The second type is Z. d. var. tomentosum. This variety is much rarer. There are fewer than 30 of these trees left! They grow only on the Hualālai volcano, which is on the island of Hawaiʻi. Because there are so few, this variety is listed as an endangered species in the United States. This means it is in danger of disappearing forever.
