The Italian Province of Zara was a part of Italy during World War II, from 1941 to 1943. It was an area within the Governorate of Dalmatia, which was controlled by the Italian government. This province was officially created on May 18, 1941, by a special law.

What was the Province of Zara?

The Province of Zara was a region that belonged to the Italian Governorate of Dalmatia. It covered an area of about 3,179 square kilometers (1,227 square miles). Around 211,900 people lived there. The two main cities in this province were Zara (today known as Zadar) and Sebenico (today called Sibenik).

The province shared a border with the Independent State of Croatia. To its south, it bordered the Province of Spalato. The main administrative center, or "Capoluogo," was Zara. This is where the main court and government offices were located.

How the Province Grew

The Province of Zara was an expansion of an area that the Kingdom of Italy had gained after World War I. Before 1941, this smaller area was only about 110.21 square kilometers (42.55 square miles). It had a population of about 25,000 people, mostly living in the city of Zara itself. In 1941, the province became much larger, as described above.
