Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Zhoukoudian or Choukoutien (Chinese: 周口店; pinyin: Zhōukǒudiàn) is a famous cave system in Beijing, China. It's a very important place for understanding early human history. Many amazing archaeological discoveries have been made here. These include some of the first examples of an ancient human species called Homo erectus, often known as Peking Man. Scientists also found bones of a huge, ancient hyena named Pachycrocuta brevirostris. The Peking Man lived in these caves a very long time ago, roughly between 200,000 and 750,000 years ago.

Discovering Ancient Secrets

The Zhoukoudian site, where Peking Man was found, was first discovered by a Swedish scientist named Johan Gunnar Andersson in 1921. Later, in the same year and again in 1923, another scientist, Otto Zdansky, started digging there. During these early digs, he found two human teeth. These small discoveries hinted at the incredible finds that would come later, revealing much about our ancient ancestors.

Who Was Peking Man?

Peking Man is the name given to the Homo erectus fossils found at Zhoukoudian. Homo erectus means "upright man." These early humans were able to walk fully upright, just like us. They were also among the first humans to use fire and make simple tools. Finding their remains in Zhoukoudian helped scientists learn a lot about how early humans lived, hunted, and survived in ancient China.

Life in the Caves

The caves at Zhoukoudian were like homes for Peking Man for hundreds of thousands of years. They provided shelter from the weather and protection from dangerous animals. Scientists have found evidence that Peking Man used fire inside the caves. This fire would have kept them warm, cooked their food, and scared away predators. They also found tools made from stone, showing that these early humans were clever and skilled.

The Giant Hyena

Among the many animal bones found at Zhoukoudian were those of a massive hyena called Pachycrocuta brevirostris. This was a much larger version of the hyenas we see today. It was a powerful predator and scavenger that lived alongside Peking Man. Studying these animal remains helps scientists understand the environment and the types of creatures that shared the landscape with early humans.

Why Zhoukoudian is Important

Zhoukoudian is a very special place because it gives us a window into the distant past. The discoveries here have helped us understand the evolution of humans and how our ancestors lived. It shows us how they adapted to their environment, used tools, and even controlled fire. Because of its importance, the Zhoukoudian site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's recognized as a place of great value to all of humanity.
