Zigoitia is a cool place in the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain. It's a type of local government area called a municipality. The main village, or capital, of Zigoitia is Ondategi. In 2018, about 1,753 people lived here.
What's in the Name?
The name Zigoitia has an interesting meaning! It comes from two old Basque words. The first part, zuhi- (or zubi), means "bridge." The second part, goitia, means "upper." So, Zigoitia basically means "Upper Bridge" or "Place of the Upper Bridge."
This name makes sense when you compare it to a nearby area called Zuia. Zuia means "Lower Bridge" and is located in a valley. So, Zigoitia is the "upper" place, and Zuia is the "lower" place.
The official name Zigoitia was chosen in 1995. It was then published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado in 1996.
