Early Life and Return to Power

Zimri-Lim was either the son or grandson of a previous king of Mari named Yahdun-Lim. However, his father was killed in a sudden takeover. This forced young Zimri-Lim to escape to a nearby kingdom called Yamhad.

While Zimri-Lim was away, another powerful king, Shamshi-Adad I from the city of Ekallatum, took over Mari. Shamshi-Adad I put his own son, Yasmah-Adad, in charge of Mari.

After Shamshi-Adad I died, Zimri-Lim saw his chance to return. With help from Yarim-Lim I, the king of Yamhad, Zimri-Lim successfully kicked Yasmah-Adad out of Mari. He then became the rightful king of his homeland.

Ruling Mari

Zimri-Lim ruled Mari for about 15 years. During this time, he worked hard to make his kingdom strong. He led many military campaigns to control the areas around the Euphrates and Khabur valleys.

One of his biggest achievements was expanding the royal palace in the city. This palace was huge, with over 260 rooms on the ground floor alone! It was probably the largest palace of its time and was admired by other kings. Sadly, this grand palace was later destroyed by Hammurabi, the king of Babylon.

Alliances and Conflicts

Zimri-Lim was also involved in the politics of the wider region. For a while, around 1764 BCE, he was a friend and ally of Hammurabi of Babylon. They teamed up to fight against other powerful kingdoms like Elam, Eshnunna, and Larsa. Zimri-Lim even sent his troops to help Hammurabi in these battles. Even though they were close allies, it seems they never met in person.

After Elam was defeated, the balance of power in Mesopotamia changed. The friendship between Zimri-Lim and Hammurabi began to fall apart, especially after Babylon conquered Larsa. In 1762 BCE, Hammurabi turned against his former ally. He attacked and took over Mari, even though they had been allies before. After this event, Zimri-Lim disappears from history, and it is believed he was killed.

Family Life

We know some things about Zimri-Lim's personal life from the clay tablets found in Mari. He married Shibtu, a princess from the kingdom of Yamhad. He also had at least eight daughters with different wives.

Several of his daughters married rulers of other towns, helping to build alliances. Two of his daughters became priestesses. Letters between Zimri-Lim and his daughters show that he respected women and believed they were good at making important decisions.

Royal Banquets

Zimri-Lim was also known for his amazing feasts. These banquets were very fancy, with special foods like chickpea salad, fried locusts, and large amounts of desert truffle.
