Zin Mar Aung (Burmese: ဇင်မာအောင်) was born on June 14, 1976. She is a politician and activist from Myanmar (formerly Burma). She is currently the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the National Unity Government of Myanmar. Before this, she was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Yankin Township from 2016 until early 2021.

Early Life and Education
Zin Mar Aung was born in Rangoon, Myanmar. She studied botany at the University of Distance Education, Yangon. This is where she earned her degree.
Her Journey as an Activist
Zin Mar Aung became involved in politics while she was a university student in the 1990s. She joined groups that were against the military government in Myanmar.
Standing Up for Rights
In 1998, she was arrested during a peaceful protest. She had read a poem and a statement. These asked the military government to respect election results. She was held and judged by a military court. She was not allowed to have a lawyer. Zin Mar Aung was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
She spent 11 years as a political prisoner. For almost nine of those years, she was held alone. In 2009, she was suddenly set free.
Helping Others and Building Democracy
After her release, Zin Mar Aung continued her work for society. She started a group to show that Asian culture and democracy can work together. She also created a support group for women who had been political prisoners. She helped found the Yangon School of Political Science.

Zin Mar Aung has started several groups. These groups work on developing democracy, empowering women, and promoting understanding between different ethnic groups. They also help former prisoners. Her "Rainfall" group encourages more women to take part in public life. The Yangon School of Political Science teaches young people about politics and democracy.
In 2012, she led an organization to raise awareness about issues affecting ethnic minorities in conflict areas. That same year, she received the "International Women of Courage Award" from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. By 2013, she was working with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems. She helped women gain more political power through the Global Women's Leadership Fund.
Becoming a Political Leader
In the 2015 Myanmar general election, Zin Mar Aung ran for a seat in the House of Representatives. She represented the Yankin Township area. She won the seat with 27,392 votes.
She was re-elected in the 2020 Myanmar general election. However, she was not able to take her seat. This was because of a military takeover in early 2021.
Role in the National Unity Government
On February 15, 2021, after the military takeover, she became a member of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw. This committee represents the elected lawmakers.

On March 2, 2021, the Committee named her as the Acting Union Minister of Foreign Affairs. She continues to serve in this important role for the National Unity Government of Myanmar.
