What Does Zinapécuaro Mean?
The name Zinapécuaro comes from the Purépecha language. It means "place of obsidian" or "place of healing." Obsidian is a dark, glass-like rock.
A Look at Zinapécuaro's History
Before the Spanish Arrived
Long ago, before the Spanish came, Zinapécuaro was part of the Tarascan kingdom. This kingdom was ruled by leaders like Hirepan, Hiquíngare, and Tanganxoán. The people built a special temple there. It was used to worship a goddess named Cuerauáperi, who was seen as the creative mother.
The Spanish Era
When the Spanish arrived, a conqueror named Luis Montañez took control of the area. Around 1530, he founded the town of Zinapécuaro. Native Mexican people formed their own community there. Franciscan friars, who were religious teachers, helped to spread Christianity.
Mexico's Independence
In October 1810, during Mexico's fight for independence, a famous leader named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla visited Zinapécuaro. After Mexico became independent, the Zinapécuaro municipality was officially created in 1831. The main town was later named Villa de Figueroa. This name honored Juan Bautista Figueroa, who was a priest in the town.
