Zlatko Portner (born January 16, 1962 – died September 23, 2020) was a famous Serbian handball player and coach. He played for Yugoslavia in the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Zlatko Portner: A Handball Star
Zlatko Portner was a very skilled handball player. He was known for his strong play in the center back position. He played for many top clubs and also represented his country.
Playing for Clubs
Zlatko started his club career playing for Crvenka. After that, he joined Metaloplastika, which was a very strong team in Yugoslavia.
Winning Big Trophies
With Metaloplastika, Zlatko helped his team win the European Cup two times in a row. This is a huge competition for handball clubs in Europe. They won in the 1984–85 and 1985–86 seasons. He also helped them win the national championship six times in a row!
In 1989, Zlatko moved to Spain to play for Barcelona. He joined his former teammate Veselin Vujović there. Together, they helped Barcelona win the European Cup in 1991.
After playing in Spain, Zlatko moved to France. He played for Vénissieux Rhône-Alpes for two seasons. Later, he also played for several teams in Switzerland, including BSV Bern, TV Zofingen, and BSC Grosshöchstetten.
Playing for His Country
Zlatko Portner was a key player for the Yugoslavia national team. He played in two World Championships.
In his first World Championship in 1986, his team won the gold medal! This was a fantastic achievement. He also helped Yugoslavia win a bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
After Playing: Coaching
While he was still playing handball in Switzerland, Zlatko started his coaching career. He coached BSV Bern and several other Swiss teams. He shared his knowledge and experience with new players.
His Family
Zlatko Portner's son, Nikola Portner, also became a professional handball player. He followed in his father's footsteps.
