Where is Zoar?

A Look at Zoar's History
The Zoar Methodist Church
The Zoar Methodist Church started in the late 1700s. Its first building was made of logs. Around 1802, a new church was built using cypress shingles. The church officially became a recognized organization in 1810.
Sadly, a fire destroyed the second church in 1910. The church building you see today was built after that fire. In 1994, the Delaware Public Archives placed a special marker there. This marker tells about the church's long history. The church is still active and is now known as the Zoar United Methodist Church.
Camp Meetings in Zoar
Soon after the church bought land in 1802, special events called camp meetings began. These were large outdoor religious meetings held in the woods next to the church. People would gather for days of worship and sermons.
By 1893, the Zoar Camp was known as one of the oldest and most successful camps in Sussex County. The last of these big meetings took place in 1918.
Zoar's Growth and Roads
By the mid-1900s, Zoar had grown into a small settlement. It is located about 5.5 miles southeast of Georgetown. County Road 48 is now called Zoar Road. This name honors the community. Zoar Road also marks part of the boundary for Delaware's 19th Senate district.
Electrical Upgrades
In 2019, the Delaware Electric Cooperative announced plans for Zoar. They wanted to build a second power substation there. By 2020, the plans changed a bit. Instead of a second one, they decided to replace the original Zoar substation.
Company representatives said these upgrades were needed because the number of people living in the area was growing fast. The project was expected to cost between $5 million and $6 million.
