Zoel García de Galdeano y Yanguas (born July 5, 1846 – died March 28, 1924) was an important Spanish mathematician. He was known for bringing new ideas in mathematics to Spain. Another famous mathematician, Julio Rey Pastor, even called him "The apostle of modern mathematics." This means Zoel helped spread new ways of thinking about math.
Zoel's Early Life and Education
Zoel García de Galdeano was born in Pamplona, Spain. His father was a soldier who sadly died in a war. Because of this, Zoel's grandfather, José Yanguas y Miranda, took care of him. His grandfather was a historian, someone who studies the past.
In 1863, when Zoel was 17, he moved to Zaragoza to continue his studies. There, he earned titles like professor and expert surveyor. A surveyor is someone who measures land accurately. In 1869, he earned his Bachelor's degree. This is a first university degree.
Zoel then studied Philosophy and Letters, and also Sciences, at the University of Zaragoza. He finished both of these studies in 1871. This showed he was very smart and interested in many subjects.
Teaching and New Ideas
From 1872 to 1879, Zoel worked as a mathematics teacher. He taught at different schools and institutes across Spain. While he was teaching in the city of Toledo, he started writing books about mathematics.
These books were very important. They introduced modern mathematical ideas from other parts of Europe into Spain. Zoel helped Spanish students and teachers learn about the latest math concepts.
In 1889, Zoel became a professor of Analytic geometry at the University of Zaragoza. Analytic geometry uses algebra to study shapes and lines. Later, in 1896, he became a professor of Infinitesimal calculus. Calculus is a high-level math used to study change. He taught at this university until he retired in 1918.
Starting a Math Journal
Zoel García de Galdeano did something very special in 1891. He started a journal called El Progreso Matemático. This was the first journal in Spain that was only about mathematics. It was a place for mathematicians to share their new ideas and discoveries.
Zoel was the main editor of this journal. It was published in two different periods: from 1891 to 1895, and again from 1899 to 1900. He also became the first Spanish mathematician of his time to regularly go to international math conferences. This helped connect Spanish math with the rest of the world.
Zoel García de Galdeano passed away in Zaragoza on March 28, 1924. He left behind a great legacy in Spanish mathematics.
