Zoltan Sarosy's Early Life
Zoltan Sarosy was born a long time ago, on August 23, 1906, in a city called Budapest. At that time, Budapest was part of a country known as Austria-Hungary.
Winning Chess Tournaments
Zoltan Sarosy was a very successful chess player. He won many chess tournaments in different cities across Hungary. Some of his wins include tournaments in Nagykanizsa (in 1929), Pécs (in 1932), and Budapest (in 1934).
During World War II, he continued to play chess. In 1943, he won the Hungarian Master Candidates Tournament. After the war, he spent some time in a camp for people who had to leave their homes in West Germany. In 1948, he moved to France.
Moving to Canada
In 1950, Zoltan Sarosy played a practice match against Henri Sapin, who was the chess champion of Alsace. The match ended in a tie (2-2). Soon after, he moved to Canada. He first arrived in Halifax and then settled in Toronto.
In Toronto, he started playing correspondence chess. This is a type of chess where players send their moves to each other, often by mail or online, instead of playing face-to-face. Sarosy became the Canadian Correspondence Champion three times: in 1967, 1972, and 1981.
In 2006, Zoltan Sarosy was honored for his achievements. He was added to the Canadian Chess Hall of Fame. He kept playing chess actively even when he was 107 years old!
Later Years and Legacy
After World War II, Zoltan Sarosy left Hungary. He had worked as a translator for the military. He divorced his first wife and later married Hella Mällo (1930-1998) in Canada. She was an immigrant from Estonia.
On August 23, 2016, Sarosy reached a very special age. He turned 110 years old, becoming a supercentenarian. A supercentenarian is someone who lives to be 110 or older. At that time, he was known as the oldest living man in Canada. He was also the fourth oldest living person in Canada.
Zoltan Sarosy passed away on June 19, 2017, in Toronto, Canada.
