Zukriegel Island is a small island located in the icy continent of Antarctica. It is about 1 nmi (which is about 1.85 km) long. This island is found between two other islands, Rabot Island and Hennessy Islands, and it is part of a group called the Biscoe Islands.
Where is Zukriegel Island Located?
Zukriegel Island is in the Biscoe Islands, which are a chain of islands off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This area is known for its cold weather and icy waters. The island itself is not inhabited by people.
How Did Zukriegel Island Get Its Name?
The island was first accurately shown on a map made by the Argentine government in 1957. Two years later, in 1959, the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) officially named the island. They named it after Josef Zukriegel. He was a geographer from Czechoslovakia who studied sea ice. His work helped people understand more about the frozen parts of the ocean.
