Zumwalt is what we call a ghost town in Wallowa County, Oregon. A ghost town is a place that used to have people living there, but now it's mostly empty. Zumwalt is located on the Zumwalt Prairie, which is a large, open grassland.
History of Zumwalt
The name "Zumwalt" comes from a man named Henry Zumwalt. He was one of the first people to live in this area.
The Zumwalt post office opened its doors on August 25, 1903. A post office is where people send and receive mail. Josie Zumwalt was the very first person in charge of the post office there.
Henry Oliver Zumwalt was born on June 5, 1854. He was from Perrydale, Oregon. He married Mary Angeline Updegraff in August 1881. Mary was born on November 15, 1853, in Indiana. They had four children together. Their third child, Josephine 'Josie' Irene Zumwalt, was born on January 20, 1885, also in Perrydale, Oregon.
