Álvaro Pombo García de los Ríos was born on June 23, 1939. He is a famous Spanish writer. He writes poems and novels. He is also known for his work as an activist.

Life and Education

Álvaro Pombo was born in Santander, a city in Cantabria, Spain. He went to college at the Complutense University of Madrid. Later, he moved to London, England, and lived there from 1966 to 1977. While in London, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Birkbeck, University of London.

Early Writing Career

Pombo's first book of poetry was called Protocolos. It was published in 1973. Four years later, in 1977, he won the El Bardo prize for his book Variaciones. When he returned to Spain in 1977, he published a collection of short stories titled Relatos sobre la falta de sustancia.

Role in the Royal Spanish Academy

Álvaro Pombo was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española on December 19, 2002. This is a very important group that helps protect and guide the Spanish language. He officially took his seat in the Academy on June 20, 2004.

Awards and Recognition

Álvaro Pombo has received several important awards for his writing.

• In October 2006, he won the Premio Planeta. This is a major literary prize in Spain. He received it for his novel La fortuna de Matilda Turpin.
