Álvaro Pombo García de los Ríos (born June 23, 1939) is a well-known Spanish writer. He is famous for writing both poetry and novels. He has also been involved in social causes.

Life and Career of Álvaro Pombo
Álvaro Pombo was born in Santander, a city in Cantabria, Spain. He studied philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Later, he continued his studies at Birkbeck, University of London in England. He lived in London for many years, from 1966 to 1977.
His first book of poems, called Protocolos, came out in 1973. A few years later, in 1977, he won the El Bardo prize for his book Variaciones. When he returned to Spain in 1977, he published a collection of short stories.
In 2002, Álvaro Pombo was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española. This is a very important group in Spain that looks after the Spanish language. He officially joined the Academy in 2004.
Prizes and Awards for Álvaro Pombo
Álvaro Pombo has won several important literary awards for his writing:
- In October 2006, he received the Premio Planeta. This is a major Spanish literary prize, and he won it for his novel La fortuna de Matilda Turpin.
- In 2012, he was awarded the Premio Nadal. He won this prize for his novel El temblor del héroe.
- In November 2024, Pombo was given the Miguel de Cervantes Prize. This is one of the most important awards for Spanish-language literature. He received it for his "extraordinary creative personality" and his unique way of writing.
