The Écossais River (which means Scottish River in English) is a smaller river that flows into the Yamaska River. It is located in the Montérégie area of Quebec, Canada. This region is on the South Shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

The Écossais River flows towards the north-east. It passes through several towns:

  • Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville
  • Farnham
  • Saint-Césaire

Where is the Écossais River?

The Écossais River is surrounded by other important waterways.

Where the River Starts

The Écossais River begins from many small streams. These streams flow through farms and forests in the western part of Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville. This starting point is near the Canadian National train tracks. It's also south of Autoroute 10 and Route 104, and west of Farnham.

The River's Journey

From its start, the Écossais River travels about 13.5 kilometers (8.4 miles).

  • It flows north through farmland in Farnham.
  • Then, it turns north-west, still in farming areas. It picks up water from smaller streams like the François-Paquette stream.
  • The river then crosses under Highway 10.
  • Finally, it continues north-east until it reaches its end.

Where the River Ends

The Écossais River flows into a small bay on the west side of the Yamaska River. Another river, the Sud-Ouest River, also joins the Yamaska River in this same bay. This meeting point is close to the town of Saint-Césaire. It's about 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) upstream from the Saint-Césaire bridge.

What's in a Name?

Long ago, this river was known by a different name: "Small Southwest River."

The name "Rivière des Écossais" (Scottish River) was officially recorded on August 17, 1978. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
