The city of Farnham gets its name from an older area called the Township of Farnham. This township was named after a place in the United Kingdom called Farnham. The first people to settle here arrived around 1800. Many of them were Loyalists from the United States. Loyalists were people who stayed loyal to Britain during the American Revolution.
Farnham officially became a "town" on December 28, 1876. Later, on March 8, 2000, the town of Farnham joined with the nearby municipality of Rainville. Together, they formed the new "City of Farnham."
Today, Farnham is also home to an important military training camp. The Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School and local military groups use this camp for training.

Farnham is built along the Yamaska River. It is located where the Saint-Lawrence lowlands begin. This means it's in a central spot between other important cities. To the west, you'll find Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. To the northeast, there is Granby.
