Óengus of Moray facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Óengus of Moray was an important leader in Scotland long ago. He was the last "king" or Mormaer of the region called Moray. This area is in northeastern Scotland today. Óengus ruled until he died in the year 1130.

Who Was Óengus of Moray?

Óengus was a powerful leader in Moray. He was the grandson of King Lulach of Scotland. This family connection might have helped him become the ruler of the people of Moray. Before Óengus, the last known leader of Moray was Máel Snechtai, who died in 1085.

Early Challenges to His Rule

If Óengus ruled for a long time, he would have faced problems with King Alexander I. This happened because the people of Moray caused trouble for a relative of King Alexander I.

The Battle of Stracathro

In the year 1130, Óengus and another leader named Máel Coluim mac Alaxandair led an army. They invaded Gaelic Scotia, which was a central part of Scotland. They had about 5,000 warriors with them.

The Clash with King David's Army

King David's general met the Moray army. This general was an old Anglo-Saxon noble named Edward Siwardsson. The two armies fought in a big battle known as the Battle of Stracathro.

The Outcome of the Battle

Old records describe what happened. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle said there was "a great slaughter." The Annals of Ulster reported that 4,000 warriors from Moray were killed. Only about 1,000 of King David's soldiers died. The Annals of Innisfallen made it clear that Óengus's army was invading. Edward's army defeated the invaders, and Óengus was killed during the battle.

What Happened After Óengus's Death?

After Óengus was defeated, the region of Moray was left without a leader. It was then likely given to William fitz Duncan. After William died in 1147, new people came to live in Moray. These new settlers were from France, Flanders, and England. Over time, many of them adopted the local Gaelic ways of life.
