Šaban Šaulić (Serbian Cyrillic: Шабан Шаулић; born September 6, 1951 – died February 17, 2019) was a famous folk singer from Serbia. He was also known in the former country of Yugoslavia. People called him the "King of Folk Music" because of his amazing voice and how he connected with his audience. His singing career lasted for more than 50 years, and he was very successful.

Life and Career

Early Life

Šaban Šaulić was born on September 6, 1951, in a town called Šabac in Serbia. His parents, Huso Šaulić and Ilduza Demirović, were from a group called Bosniaks. His mother was originally from Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Šaban spent his childhood. He had a sister, Sarajka, who helped take care of him.

When he was younger, Šaban really loved football. But his uncle, Alija, saw that Šaban had a special talent for music. In the mid-1960s, his uncle asked him to sing at a local kafana (a type of traditional restaurant or cafe). This was the very beginning of Šaban's long and successful music career.

Music Career

In 1969, when Šaban was 18 years old, he recorded his first song called Dajte mi utjehu ("Give me Solace"). This song quickly became a big hit! Because of its success, Šaban moved to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. This helped him continue to build his promising music career. By the mid-1970s, Šaban Šaulić was a very well-known name. His songs were popular and often requested in many kafane.

Besides singing, Šaulić also appeared on TV. He was a judge on popular singing competitions. He was a judge on Zvezde Granda from 2013 to 2016. He also judged "Pinkove zvezde" during the 2016–2017 season.

Discography

Šaban Šaulić released many albums throughout his long career. His first hit single was Dajte mi utjehu in 1969. He continued to release popular music for decades, becoming one of the most loved folk singers.

Personal Life

Family

In 1974, Šaulić married his wife, Gordana. They briefly separated in 1985. During that short time, Šaulić wrote a song called "Gordana" and dedicated it to her. They got back together after only 20 days. Šaban and Gordana had three children: a son named Mihajlo, and two daughters, Sanela and Ilda. His daughter Ilda also became a singer, following in her father's footsteps.

Before he married Gordana, Šaulić had another son named Robert. He supported Robert financially until he turned 18.

Šaulić's father passed away suddenly while Šaban was on a concert tour in Australia. He was very sad that he could not attend his father's funeral, which happened the very next day. Šaulić often said that he would never truly get over not being there.

His Passing

On February 17, 2019, Šaban Šaulić passed away. This happened in the early morning hours after he had a concert in Bielefeld, Germany. He was on his way to the Düsseldorf Airport to fly back home to Belgrade. He was in a car with his best man, Boban Stojadinović, and his keyboard player, Mirsad Kerić, who was driving.

Sadly, the car was involved in a traffic collision. All three were taken to the hospital. Šaulić and Kerić later passed away.

The news of Šaulić's death was a big shock to his friends, fellow musicians, and many fans. People all over the region were very sad. He was buried on February 22, 2019, in the Alley of Distinguished Citizens at the Belgrade New Cemetery in Serbia.

In February 2020, a year after his passing, Šaulić was given a special award. He received the Golden Medal of Merits from the Republic of Serbia, which is a very high honor.
