Ángel Suquía Goicoechea (born October 2, 1916, died July 13, 2006) was an important Spanish Catholic cardinal. He served as the Archbishop of Madrid from 1983 to 1994.

Early Life and Education
Ángel Suquía Goicoechea began his education at a young age.
- From 1925 to 1927, he studied with the La Salle Christian Brothers in Beasain, Spain.
- He then attended the Minor Seminary in Saturrarán, Motrico, until 1931.
- After that, he moved to the Major Seminary in Vitoria, where he studied until 1936.
Studies During Wartime
When the Spanish Civil War started in 1936, Ángel Suquía Goicoechea became an instructor for soldiers. In 1939, he traveled to Germany to study liturgy at the Benedictine monastery of Maria Laach. However, the Second World War began that same year, and he quickly returned to Spain for safety.
In 1946, he went to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He stayed there until 1949 and earned a doctorate in theology. His studies focused on the importance of the Holy Mass in the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
A Life of Service
Ángel Suquía Goicoechea was ordained as a priest on July 7, 1940. This was the start of his long career in the Catholic Church.
Becoming a Bishop
- On May 17, 1966, Pope Paul VI appointed him as the Bishop of Almería.
- He then served as the Bishop of Málaga from 1969 to 1973.
- On April 13, 1973, he became the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela.
Archbishop of Madrid
On April 12, 1983, Pope John Paul II chose him to become the Archbishop of Madrid. He took over this important role from Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancón.
Becoming a Cardinal
On May 25, 1985, Ángel Suquía Goicoechea was made a Cardinal-Priest of Gran Madre di Dio. This is a very high honor in the Catholic Church. He continued to serve as the Archbishop of Madrid until 1994, when he was 77 years old. He is buried in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.
