Her Early Life and Education
Áslaug Magnúsdóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland. Her parents are Magnús Sigurðsson and Rakel Valdimarsdóttir. She has one brother named Sigurður R. Magnússon. Áslaug spent her childhood living in both Los Angeles and Reykjavík.
She went to college at the University of Iceland. In 1993, she graduated with a degree in law. After that, she received a special scholarship called a Fulbright scholarship. This allowed her to study in the United States. She attended Duke University School of Law for her master's degree in law. Later, in 2000, she earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. She was the first woman from Iceland to achieve this.
Áslaug has two sons. Their names are Gunnar A. Thoroddsen and Ocean Thor Tueni.
Her Career Journey
Áslaug started her career in Iceland while she was still a student. She helped manage a modeling agency. She also worked as a corporate and tax lawyer at Deloitte. After finishing her studies, she moved to London. There, she worked as a consultant for a company called McKinsey & Company.
Working in Fashion
Áslaug's first experience in the fashion world was helping with a modeling agency in college. She later joined Baugur Group. This was an investment company that focused on fashion and retail businesses. She helped the company invest in new fashion brands.
In 2006, Áslaug moved to New York City. She joined Marvin Traub Associates. In 2007, she teamed up with Marvin Traub to create TSM Capital. This company invested in fashion designer brands. She also worked with jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia. In 2009, she joined Gilt Groupe, an online shopping company.
In 2009, Áslaug had a new idea. She wanted to create a way for people to order designer clothes directly from the runway shows. This idea became Moda Operandi. She started this company with Lauren Santo Domingo. Moda Operandi allowed customers to pre-order items right after they were shown on the fashion runway.
Áslaug left Moda Operandi in 2013. After that, she co-founded another business called Tinker Tailor. This company allowed customers to customize designer clothes. They could also design their own unique items. Tinker Tailor stopped its operations in 2015.
In 2020, Áslaug launched her newest business, Katla. Katla focuses on making fashion more sustainable. This means creating clothes in ways that are better for the environment. In 2022, Áslaug became a Goodwill Ambassador for Fashion 4 Development. This group helps support the United Nations' goals for development.
