Åtvidaberg Municipality (which in Swedish is Åtvidabergs kommun) is a special area in southeastern Sweden. It's like a local government area, similar to a district or county in other countries. This municipality is part of Östergötland County. The main town, or "seat," of this municipality is Åtvidaberg, where about 7,000 people live.
The current municipality was created in 1971. Before that, Åtvidaberg was a market town established in 1947. When the municipality was formed, it joined with some smaller towns and villages nearby. A small part of the area even came from a different county called Kalmar County.

Interesting Facts About Åtvidaberg
Early Car Production
Did you know that Åtvidaberg once had a company called Åtvidabergs Vagnfabrik? This "Wagon Factory" started in 1910. They built some of the very first cars! They made 12 cars in total. These early cars looked a bit like American horse-drawn carriages, with big wheels.
Historic Churches
Åtvidaberg has two interesting churches. The "Stora Kyrkan," which means "the Big Church," was built in the 1870s. It has a grand, old-fashioned style called neo-Gothic. There's also an even older church called "Gamla Kyrkan," or "the Old Church." This one dates back to the 1600s! It was rebuilt and is now used as a church again.
Emigration to America
In the late 1800s, something big happened in Åtvidaberg. Many copper mines in the area closed down. Because of this, almost one-third of the people living in Åtvidaberg Municipality decided to move away. They traveled all the way to Ishpeming, Michigan in the United States to find new opportunities. In 1994, a special plaque was placed at the Mormorsgruvan mine in Åtvidaberg to remember this important event.
