Çäkçäk (pronounced chak-chak) is a yummy sweet treat. It's very popular in countries like Russia, especially in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. Many people even call it the national sweet of Tatarstan!

This tasty dessert is made from a special kind of dough. The dough is cut into tiny pieces, often shaped like small balls. Sometimes, these pieces are even shaped like noodles!

How Çäkçäk is Made

First, the small dough pieces are cooked in hot oil. This is called deep-frying. It makes them golden and crispy.

After they are fried, the pieces are carefully stacked. They are usually piled up into a pyramid or a mound. Then, hot, sweet honey is poured all over them. This makes the pieces stick together.

Sometimes, people add yummy things to Çäkçäk. They might add crunchy hazelnuts or sweet dried fruits. These additions make the treat even more special. Once the honey cools down, the Çäkçäk becomes firm and ready to eat.

Çäkçäk for Special Occasions

Çäkçäk is often a big part of celebrations. For example, at traditional weddings, people make a much larger Çäkçäk. This giant sweet is often decorated with colorful candies and shiny dragées.

A really huge Çäkçäk was made on June 14, 2018. It weighed an amazing 4026.4 kilograms! This giant sweet was made for the opening of the FIFA fan zone in Kazan, Russia.

Different Kinds of Çäkçäk

There are a few different ways to make Çäkçäk. These variations are popular in different countries:

  • If the dough is fried as thin noodles, it's called Boxara käläwäse. This name means "Bukhara käläwä."
  • In Kazakhstan, a similar sweet called shek-shek is also made with noodle-like dough.
  • Uzbek chakchak can come in different shapes. It can be half-rounded balls, noodles, or even flakes.
  • Tajik chakchak is made in both ways. You can find it as small balls or as noodles.
