ENSAE Paris is a famous university in France. Its full name is the École nationale de la statistique et de l'administration économique Paris. It is one of France's special "Grandes Écoles" and part of Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

ENSAE Paris is known for teaching subjects like economics, finance, applied mathematics, statistics, and data science. It is one of the top engineering schools in France. The school is directly connected to the French government's statistics office, Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques (INSEE). It also works closely with the French Ministry of Economy and Finance.

History of ENSAE Paris

How ENSAE Paris Started

ENSAE was first created in 1942. It was called the School of Applied Statistics. This school was started by the National Statistics Service, which later became INSEE.

In 1946, when INSEE was formed, the school changed its name. It became the INSEE Specialization School. Back then, it trained people for two types of government jobs. These were "administrateur" (top management) and "attaché" (a lower level).

Growing and Changing Names

The school's name changed again in 1960. It became the National School of Statistics and Economic Administration. More students joined, including those from law and economics universities.

In 1971, ENSAE was officially recognized as a "Grande École." This means it became one of France's elite schools.

Research and New Focus Areas

In the 1980s, the school started helping students with their PhD studies. A research lab called CREST was also created in 1988. This lab works with École Polytechnique.

In 1994, the training for "attachés" moved to a new school called ENSAI. ENSAE then focused on training "administrateurs." More students chose to study financial modeling and new areas like biostatistics. They also learned about quantitative marketing.

Moving to a New Campus

In 2006, it was announced that the school would move. It moved to a new campus in Palaiseau in 2017. This campus is close to École polytechnique.

What ENSAE Paris Does

Training Future Leaders

ENSAE is part of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). It is guided by the Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Employment. The school trains people to become statisticians and economists. Some students become civil servants in the "Corps des Administrateurs de l'INSEE." These are top public managers in the French government.

The economists and statisticians trained at ENSAE help with economic research. Former students work for international groups like the UN, IMF, and World Bank. They also work for the French government, like the Ministry of Economy and INSEE.

Who Can Join ENSAE Paris?

Students come from many different backgrounds. Some come from "classes préparatoires." These are special classes that prepare students for top schools. Others join after getting a graduate degree from universities like normaliens or polytechniciens.

ENSAE is special because it accepts students from science, business, and humanities. The main requirement is that students have a strong background in numbers and math.

Since 2006, ENSAE has been allowed to give out the "ingénieur" title. This means its graduates are recognized as engineers by the French Commission of Engineering Titles.

School Partnerships

Working with Other Universities

ENSAE Paris has many partnerships with other schools. Students can complete part of their studies at these partner institutions. Many students choose to do a "dual degree" program. This means they get an extra Master of Science, MBA, or PhD degree.

These degrees come from famous universities around the world. Some examples include Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, NYU, Chicago, Cornell, Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, and LSE.

Partnerships in France

ENSAE also works with French schools like Sciences Po Paris, HEC Paris, ESSEC Business School, and ESCP Business School. This allows ENSAE students to study at these schools at the same time. They can get an extra master's degree without taking entry exams.

ENSAE used to be part of ParisTech. This was a group of top engineering schools in Paris. In 2019, ENSAE and some other schools left ParisTech. They created a new group called "Institut Polytechnique."

Future Jobs for Graduates

Where ENSAE Graduates Work

Graduates from ENSAE work in many different areas. They often work in data science and machine learning. They also find jobs in finance, management, consulting, and economic research.

About 14% of recent graduates work for the government. The rest work in private companies. Around 25% work in insurance, and 21% work in consulting.

Working Abroad

About 17% of graduates get their first job outside France. Many go to London and New York. They are hired by tech companies, banks, insurers, or hedge funds. Companies value their skills in data science, machine learning, finance, math, economics, and statistics.

Types of Jobs (2006 Graduates)

  • 53% work in Machine learning/Data Science (including research).
  • 33% work in finance and insurance.
    • 21% work in financial engineering.
    • 7% are traders.
    • 11% are actuaries (who assess financial risks).
    • 3% are portfolio managers.
  • 24% work in market surveys and consulting.
    • 10% do economic analysis.

    • 1% work in audit.

Since ENSAE started, over 6,500 statisticians, economists, machine learning engineers, and data scientists have graduated.

Important Note About the Name

The name ENSAE can also refer to SUPAERO. This is a "grande école" for aerospace engineering in Toulouse, France. To avoid confusion, ENSAE Paris is called "ENSAE Paris." This shows it is located in Paris.

Famous Alumni

The ENSAE Alumni Network

As a "Grande École," ENSAE has a strong network of former students, called alumni. The "Association des Anciens de l'ENSAE" helps connect graduates. It also supports them throughout their careers. This association is part of other larger alumni groups.

Some Notable Graduates

Many successful people have graduated from ENSAE. Here are a few examples:

  • Philippe Brassac, CEO of Crédit Agricole S.A (a large bank).
  • Benoît Coeuré, a member of the executive board of the European Central Bank.
  • Frédéric Gagey, CFO of Air France-KLM (an airline group).
  • Alain Bensoussan, a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He used to lead the European Space Agency.
  • François Bourguignon, former chief economist of the World Bank.
  • Franck Goddio, an underwater archaeologist.
