History of ENSAE Paris
How the School Started
ENSAE was first created in 1942. It was called the School of Applied Statistics back then. It was set up by the National Statistics Service, which later became INSEE.
In 1946, when INSEE was formed, the school changed its name. It became the INSEE Specialization School. At this time, the school trained people for two types of government jobs. These were "administrateur" (a high-level manager) and "attaché" (a lower-level executive).
Growing and Changing Names
The school's name changed again in 1960. It became the National School of Statistics and Economic Administration. More students joined, including those from law and economics universities.
In 1971, ENSAE was officially recognized as a Grande Ecole. This means it's one of France's top higher education institutions.
Research and New Paths
In the 1980s, the school started offering scholarships for students to study for their PhDs. A research lab called CREST was also created in 1988. This lab works with Ecole Polytechnique.
In 1994, the training program for "attachés" became its own school. This new school, ENSAI, moved to Rennes. ENSAE continued to train "administrateurs." More students at ENSAE started to focus on financial modeling and new areas like biostatistics.
Moving to a New Campus
In 2006, it was announced that the school would move. The plan was to move to the new ParisTech Campus in Palaiseau by 2010. This campus is close to the famous École Polytechnique.
ENSAE Paris officially moved to its current campus in Palaiseau in 2017.
What ENSAE Paris Does
Training Future Leaders
ENSAE Paris is part of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). It trains people to become statisticians and economists. Some of these students become civil servants. They join a special group of top public managers in the French government.
These trained economists and statisticians help with economic research. Many former students work for international groups like the UN, IMF, and World Bank. Others work for the French government or public organizations.
Who Can Join ENSAE Paris?
Students come to ENSAE from many different backgrounds:
- Many come from "classes préparatoires." These are special classes that prepare students for top French schools. They come from science, business, and humanities paths.
- Some students join after getting a university degree. This includes students from other top schools like normaliens or polytechniciens.
ENSAE is unique because it accepts students from science, business, and humanities. The main requirement is that students have a strong background in numbers and math.
Since 2006, the school has been allowed to give out the "ingénieur" title. This is a special engineering degree in France.
School Partnerships
Working with Other Universities
ENSAE Paris has many partnerships with other schools. Students can complete part of their studies at these partner institutions. Many students choose to get a second degree, like a Master of Science or a PhD.
They can study at famous universities around the world. These include Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, NYU, Chicago, Cornell, Cambridge, and Oxford.
ENSAE also partners with French business schools like Sciences Po Paris, HEC Paris, ESSEC Business School, and ESCP Business School. This allows students to study at both schools at the same time. They can get an extra master's degree without taking an entrance exam.
Past and Present Groups
ENSAE used to be a member of ParisTech. This was a group of top engineering schools in Paris.
In 2019, ENSAE and some other schools left ParisTech. They formed a new group called the "Institut Polytechnique."

Alumni Network
Staying Connected
As a Grande Ecole, ENSAE has a strong network of former students, called alumni. The "Association des Anciens de l'ENSAE" (ENSAE Alumni Association) helps graduates stay in touch. It also supports them throughout their careers.
The ENSAE Alumni Association is part of other larger alumni groups. The current president of the association is Julien Guitard.
