Édgar Morales Pérez was a Mexican politician who was chosen to be the mayor of Matehuala, a city in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He was elected on July 1, 2012. He belonged to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM). These two parties worked together in his city. The National Action Party (PAN) had been in charge of Matehuala for many years. Morales Pérez was supposed to start his job as mayor in September 2012.
Sadly, on August 12, 2012, he and his campaign manager, Juan Francisco Hernández Colunga, were killed. This happened while they were driving home from a birthday party. Hernández's wife was also there and survived, but she could not say who was responsible for the attack.
About Édgar Morales Pérez
Édgar Morales Pérez came from a family that owned businesses. He studied Civil Engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico de Matehuala. After finishing college, he started working for a construction company called Constructions Tribasa. This job allowed him to help with big building projects in Mexico and Guatemala.
Later, he started his own construction company. He began working for the city of Matehuala. He became well-known in Matehuala because he helped pay for sports events and dance contests. In early 2012, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) asked him to run for mayor. He was married to Noelia Cortez de Morales and had three children.
His Death
On August 12, 2012, Édgar Morales Pérez and his campaign manager, Juan Francisco Hernández Colunga, were going home. It was around 1:45 in the morning, and they were coming back from a quinceañera party. While they were driving in Matehuala, they were attacked. Both of them died right there.
Juan Francisco Hernández Colunga's wife, Claudia Martínez de Hernández, was also with them. She was badly hurt and taken to the hospital. She was the only person who survived the attack. The people who did this were not found. Authorities said that a criminal group was likely responsible for the attack.
Funeral Services
The funeral ceremony and burial for Morales Pérez and his campaign manager took place on August 13. More than 1,000 people came to the service. This included local politicians and former mayors of Matehuala.
After the ceremony, a mariachi music group played songs. They played outside the chapel to remember Morales Pérez and Hernández Colunga. Their coffins were then taken to the Jardines de la Luz cemetery.
What Happened Next
The governor of San Luis Potosí, Fernando Toranzo Fernández, asked for help from federal military forces. This was to make sure law enforcement was stronger across the state.
To honor Morales Pérez, the city of Matehuala decided not to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on September 16, 2012.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) chose a new mayor for Matehuala. His name was Héctor Fermín Ávila Lucero, and he started his job on September 21, 2012.
