Early Life
Éric Serra was born in Saint-Mandé, France, in 1959. His dad, Claude Serra, was a songwriter and poet. This meant Éric grew up surrounded by music and learned about how it's made from a very young age.
A Career in Film Music
In the early 1980s, Éric Serra met film director Luc Besson. Luc asked Éric to create the music for his first movie, Le Dernier Combat (1983). Since then, Éric has composed the music for almost all of Luc Besson's films. He also scored several movies that Besson wrote, like Wasabi.
Composing for James Bond
In 1995, Éric Serra was chosen to compose the music for the James Bond film GoldenEye. His music for the movie sounded very modern and different from previous Bond films. Some people really liked his new style, while others missed the classic James Bond music. Because of this, another composer, John Altman, was later brought in to re-do the music for a famous tank chase scene. After GoldenEye, David Arnold took over as the main composer for James Bond movies until 2008.
The Name RXRA
Éric Serra is sometimes known as RXRA. This nickname comes from how his name sounds when pronounced in French. For example, his song Little Light of Love from The Fifth Element movie soundtrack is credited to RXRA.
Other Creative Projects
From 1980 to 1988, Éric Serra played bass guitar for the French singer Jacques Higelin. Besides composing for films, Éric is also a songwriter. He wrote popular songs like "It's Only Mystery" for the film Subway and "My Lady Blue" for Le Grand Bleu. In 1998, he released his own rock music album called RXRA. He also created the music for the 2008 Las Vegas show 'Criss Angel: Believe', which was a Cirque Du Soleil show starring Criss Angel.
Onscreen Appearances
Éric Serra usually works behind the scenes, but he has appeared on French television to perform music. He also had a small acting role in the Luc Besson film Subway, where he played a character called 'Enrico the bassist'.
